AUDIENCE POLL: Best Bar
By RAY ROUTHIER, Staff Writer Portland Press Herald Sunday, March 18, 2007

Gritty McDuff's, Portland, Freeport and Auburn 154 Ri Ra, Portland 60 Gritty's started on Fore Street in the heart of the Old Port some 19 years ago, before the Old Port was as fashionable as it is now. It was also the first of the Maine microbreweries, which have exploded in popularity since then. So what makes a great bar? Well, Gritty's co-founder Ed Stebbins said this week it's the people who work there, and the location. Speaking of which, Gritty's opened its newest location, in Auburn, about a year ago. Ri Ra, on Commercial Street near the state pier, is a great place for Guinness, good food, Irish and otherwise, and live music.
