AUDIENCE POLL: Best Cheap Eats
By RAY ROUTHIER, Staff Writer Portland Press Herald Sunday, March 18, 2007

Becky's Diner, Portland 79 Granny's Burritos, Portland 77 Another close one. Becky's owner, Becky Rand, prides herself on running a diner where the elderly, teenagers and other folks without a ton of money in their pocket can get a good meal. You can get pretty filled up on $5 at Becky's. The place is on Commercial Street and is scheduled this year to undergo an expansion, including an outdoor deck. Granny's, home of giant and wonderfully fresh-tasting burritos on Fore Street, will also fill you up for about $5. People in Maine take their cheap eats seriously, and there were a lot of vote-getters this year, including: Duckfat, Silly's, Norm's and Susan's Fish & Chips in Portland; Cole Farms in Gray; Rapid Ray's in Saco; Harmon's Lunch in Falmouth; and Fat Boy in Brunswick.

As good as the all are, There is no place like Becky's. On the working waterfront, seniors, business folk, a few (sometimes too many) tourists and a host of other interesting people. Can't beat Becky's!report abuse
