“Sweet Charity” Strike
The third production of the season has closed. Sweet Charity was stuck on Sunday. This show seems to have the most difficulties – its often cast before the holidays in December, has scheduling conflicts with the winter fundraise – this year’s Broadway! And has to contend with the winter weather. Usually it’s cancelled rehearsals, but this cast and crew lost a dress with audience and a performance due to the two snow storms accompanied by parking bans. You wouldn’t know of the difficulties and disappointments on Sunday where many cast members told me they’d had a lot of fun doing this show.
First time stage manager Kathy Routh (recipient of last year’s Volunteer of the Year award) said she really enjoyed learning the new role and had great assistance from her more experienced team. Many of the rest of production staff are long time Lyric volunteers. One traditional was brought back for this show; the strike party’s meal was “theater cooked” - prepared by Uncle Don Drew using the theater’s kitchen. A real treat for the cast, once they’d finished the work of strike!
